Deep Clean vs Regular Clean: Which Does Your Home Need?

Start here before you book anything

Most people ring us and ask for a regular clean, then we turn up and the home actually needs a deep clean. It happens constantly, across suburbs from Footscray to Hawthorn to Glen Waverley. It's not a criticism of anyone. Life gets busy, and build-up creeps up on you without you noticing. But booking the wrong service means you either get a surface-level result when you needed a thorough one, or you pay for a deep clean on a home that was already in great shape. So let me explain the difference properly.

What a regular clean actually covers

A regular clean is maintenance. It keeps a home that's already clean, clean. Think of it like mowing a lawn that's already at a reasonable length. We wipe down benchtops, clean the toilet, mop floors, vacuum carpets, wipe mirrors, and empty bins. We're working through the home efficiently because the grime hasn't had time to build up. Most people on a fortnightly or weekly schedule are in regular clean territory.

Regular cleans work well when:

  • The home has been cleaned professionally in the last four to eight weeks
  • You're reasonably tidy between cleans
  • There's no visible mould, grease build-up, or staining
  • The skirting boards, window tracks and light switches don't have a visible layer of dust or grime on them

What a deep clean actually covers

A deep clean goes into the detail that gets skipped during regular maintenance. We're scrubbing grout lines in the shower, getting into the grease behind the rangehood, wiping down every skirting board, cleaning inside the oven, pulling out the grime from window tracks, and sanitising spots that rarely get touched. It takes significantly longer than a regular clean on the same home, because we're not just maintaining, we're resetting.

A deep clean is the right starting point when:

  • The home hasn't been professionally cleaned in more than two months
  • You've just moved in and don't know the cleaning history of the property
  • There's visible soap scum on shower screens, mould on grout, or grease in the kitchen
  • Skirting boards have a noticeable grey or brown film on them
  • Window tracks have dirt, dead insects or moisture residue sitting in them
  • The oven, rangehood filter or dishwasher seal looks like it hasn't been touched in months

The skirting board test

This is genuinely one of the quickest ways to work out which service you need. Run a damp finger along a skirting board in any room. If it comes up dirty, your home needs a deep clean first. Skirting boards collect dust, pet hair and humidity residue, and they're almost always skipped in a casual home clean. If they're neglected, the rest of the home usually has similar build-up in places you can't see as easily.

I've done this test in apartments in Carlton, townhouses in Richmond, and family homes in Camberwell, and it tells the story every time.

Grout doesn't lie either

Shower grout is another reliable indicator. White or light grout that's gone pink, orange or black hasn't just been missed in a clean. That's mould and soap scum that's been sitting there long enough to stain. A regular clean won't shift it. You need the scrubbing, the right products, and the time that comes with a deep clean. Homes in Brighton and South Yarra with older bathrooms often have tile grout that looks permanently discoloured until a proper deep clean proves otherwise.

First clean always works differently

Even if you're planning to have us come fortnightly going forward, the first clean should almost always be a deep clean. We're starting from an unknown baseline. Once we've done that initial reset, your regular fortnightly cleans become genuinely efficient and thorough, because we're maintaining a clean home rather than chasing build-up every visit.

This applies whether you're booking for your own home in Kew or Toorak, setting up Airbnb turnover cleaning for an investment property in St Kilda, or getting a rental ready after tenants leave and needing a bond clean in Point Cook or Werribee.

How to tell before you book

Here's a simple self-check. Walk through the home and look at:

  • Skirting boards: visible grime or dust film means deep clean
  • Shower grout: any discolouration beyond light soap scum means deep clean
  • Oven interior: burnt-on residue or grease means deep clean
  • Window tracks: dirt and debris sitting in the tracks means deep clean
  • Rangehood filter: visibly greasy or grey means deep clean
  • Under the toilet rim: staining or build-up means deep clean

If three or more of those have obvious build-up, book a deep clean. If none of them do, a regular clean will do the job well.

What drives the price difference

Deep cleans take more time and more product. The size of your home, how long since the last proper clean, and which add-ons you need (inside oven, inside the fridge, interior windows) all affect the time required. We don't quote a flat rate without knowing those details, so once you tell us about your home we'll text you an exact figure.
